As leaders of American philanthropic, religious, civil rights,
and voluntary organizations, we come together as people of different faiths and beliefs, backgrounds, and cultures to declare that: |
|
-
We grieve for the countless victims of our national—indeed international—tragedy.
We honor the bravery of so many in carrying out rescue efforts and serving ongoing needs. And, we honor the generosity of millions of individuals, corporations, foundations, and other organizations in their giving.
-
We believe that the perpetrators and
supporters of the terrorist attacks must be brought to
justice in a careful, sustained manner, consistent with
the principles of international human rights.
-
We repudiate all actions of intolerance, racism, prejudice, and violence that have
occurred in the wake of the September 11 attacks, in particular the attacks on Muslims, Arab Americans, Sikhs, or any other segments of our population.
|
|
-
We believe that the basic civil liberties and constitutional rights of all people in our country must be protected, while we seek to develop legitimate security precautions.
-
We recommit ourselves to the task of building bonds of trust and embracing diversity in communities all across our nation and with the global community of people and nations.
-
We will redouble our efforts to address the scourges of poverty, inequity, and injustice that persist both within our country and around the world.
-
We will be a constant voice speaking out for the fundamental values that have guided our country for over two hundred years and that inspire people around the world—particularly the values of freedom, justice, community, and respect for the dignity and worth of every individual.
A Message from the Board of Directors and
members of INDEPENDENT SECTOR
and Other Supporting Organizations
