September 11, 2001—The Response

Creating Forums to Discuss the Tragedy

AARP
AARP website offers grief and bereavement support along with a discussion area for users to post messages and share their thoughts regarding the tragedy on September 11.

Aspen Institute
The Aspen Institute fosters enlightened, morally responsible leadership and convenes leaders and policymakers to address the foremost challenges of our time. Numerous Aspen Institute programs are either currently underway, or being developed, to promote sustainable peace and justice throughout the world, to advance a better understanding of Islamic society and culture, and to explore the values that underlie our decisions.

Three such programs are:
1)  The Justice & Society program, that will consist of seminars for U.S. and foreign judges on "International Human Rights Law: Its Use in National Jurisprudence" in hopes of expanding the reach of the rule of law;
2)  The Congressional program, that recently convened a breakfast meeting for several members of Congress that focused on the Islamic world in order to provide a contextual background for making sound policy decisions, and;
3)   The Global Interdependence Initiative, that helps its partners reach a shared understanding of good global citizenship by promoting humanitarian and development issues as part of the US response to terrorism.

Charlotte Museum of History
The Charlotte Museum of History has invited all public school teachers to bring their classes to the Museum at no charge for self-guided "Freedom Trail" visits. This presents the opportunity for the Museum to serve as a backdrop for a discussion of freedom, patriotism, national resolve, and religious tolerance. A forthcoming "International Expressions of Faith Day," previously planned, has been slightly modified to include a panel of faith leaders including Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Seik, and Buddhist on the subject "All Alike, Only Different."

StargazerNET
StargazerNET is making it possible for anyone, anywhere to lend a hand and made a difference in response to this national tragedy. Individuals and organizations can create message boards and mini websites to communicate, share thoughts and feelings, and create online resources so that others in need can benefit from them.

The Stargazer Foundation has accelerated the release of additional free capabilities on StargazerNET. They are temporarily waiving this nonprofit limitation so for-profit companies and other commercial enterprises can also use StargazerNET to support those aspects of their business activities that have been curtailed as a result of the attacks. StargazerNET provides three major Collaboration Capabilities that can be used to augment normal travel and face-to-face meetings. The following capabilities can be used to support an organization's internal activities, or to communicate with its members, constituents, and customers:

  • Conference Rooms: real time discussions between participants.
  • Message Boards: on-going discussions over an extended period of time that can branch into discussions on many subtopics.
  • Moderated Discussions: real time or extended discussions designed to simulate meetings and seminars, and may involve speakers, moderators, participants, and an audience. Any information already on the Web can be shown as reference materials during the discussions.
