September 11, 2001—The Response

Providing Counseling Services

Aetna Foundation
The Aetna Foundation has increased its employee matching gift program by $1million to provide a 5-to-1 matching contribution in response to the events of September 11 in New York, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania. To date, Aetna employees have contributed more than $130,000. Aetna has also set up counseling services by establishing toll-free numbers for phone counseling, scheduling on-site "Crisis Intervention Management Services," and providing group counseling at Aetna's New York offices.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation
The Annie E. Casey Foundation announced that it will contribute more than $3 million to support aid and assistance to the children and families directly affected by the events of September 11. In addition to the pledge of financial resources, Casey is volunteering experienced family and crisis counselors from its direct services unit to assist local New York agencies in supporting traumatized and grief-stricken families.

Association of Jewish Family and Children's Agencies
The Association of Jewish Family and Children's Agencies is providing emergency financial assistance to people economically challenged due to layoffs throughout the country. The organization is providing grief counseling, educational programs, and emergency services in public and private schools and synagogues. The Association has contacted all of its elderly clients, adoption clients, mental health clients, developmentally disabled clients, and others who need contact, grief counseling, and reassurance. The Association has added a section on its website on dealing with trauma for children, adults, and clergy.

The Israeli Voluntary & Nonprofit Sector
The Israeli Voluntary & Nonprofit Sector is offering their services to help organizations and individuals contact nonprofit organizations in Israel that have expertise in dealing with emergency situations—counseling children, anxiety situations among the elderly, and other post trauma aspects.

National Mental Health Association
National Mental Health Association (NMHA) is providing information and counsel to community-based Mental Health Association affiliates across the United States. During the afternoon of September 11th, NMHA began implementing a range of priority actions that targeted supports to the MHAs of New York City and surrounding communities, MHAs in New Jersey, Connecticut, Washington, DC, and Montgomery County and Prince George’s County, MD.

These efforts included helping develop an immediate crisis plan to connect Crisis and Information and Referrals lines in New York and surrounding counties and sending large quantities of materials, including NMHA’s Coping with Loss brochure to priority geographic areas. Many NMHA staff spent hundreds of hours providing counsel to MHAs all over the country regarding community mental health issues and needs resulting from exposure to extremely violent and highly visible traumatic events. They have also developed a series of fact sheets including materials specifically for helping children, adults, college students, people in the workforce, and people in the faith community.
