(WASHINGTON, January 25, 2012)—We are saddened by the passing of Robert M. Frehse, Jr. past Independent Sector Board Member, former executive director of the Hearst Foundations, and an exemplary leader in the nonprofit and philanthropic community.
Bob was well known for his nearly three decades of stellar stewardship at the Hearst Foundations, composed of the William Randolph Hearst Foundation and the Hearst Foundation, Inc. After his retirement in 2007, Bob continued to share his incomparable expertise and experience with the foundations as a consultant. He was well known for his high standards in philanthropic management and the many important relationships he nurtured between the Hearst Foundations and the nonprofit community.
Bob was also a vital voice on the IS Board of Directors from 1989-1994 and 1996-1997. He was a long-time supporter of the John W. Gardner Leadership Award and chaired the IS 25th Anniversary Committee.

Bob was a graduate of Northwestern University and the American Graduate School of International Management in Phoenix. In World War II, he was a Lieutenant JG in the United States Navy.
