Virginia A. Hodgkinson Research Prize

Prize Criteria and Nomination Process

The Virginia A. Hodgkinson Research Prize Selection Committee is comprised of four senior academic researchers and practitioners and is chaired in 2006 by Professor Steven Rathgeb-Smith, Associate Dean and Professor at the Evans School of Public Affairs, University of Washington. The committee is responsible for identifying outstanding published research and reviewing all submissions. The research submitted for this prize must exemplify both the scholarly rigor and quality for which Virginia A. Hodgkinson's work is known. Each submission will be judged on the contribution the research makes to policy and practice. Guidelines included:

  • Entries must further the general understanding of philanthropy, voluntary action, nonprofit organizations, or civil society;
  • The research article, report, or book must have been published within three calendar years prior to the year of the award (2003 – 2006);
  • Entries must be published by a commercial publishing house or a professional organization or association.  Unpublished theses or dissertations and self-published works are not accepted.
  • Entries must be submitted in English or translated into English.
  • Submissions from researchers and practitioners representing any discipline within the nonprofit field, or organization are welcome;
  • Multi-disciplinary approaches, submissions from young scholars and practitioners working in collaboration with others, and from researchers and practitioners at the start of their careers are encouraged;
  • Prior prize recipients are ineligible for a five-year period after their award is received; and
  • Self-nominations will be accepted.
