Giving and Volunteering in the United States

Has charitable giving increased or decreased over the past ten years? Why do people make charitable contributions? What motivates people to volunteer their time? What is the value of volunteer time? What can organizations do to recruit volunteers and increase the amount of private dollars given? Since the early 1980's, INDEPENDENT SECTOR has worked to understand various dimensions of charitable giving and volunteering in the United States.

The cornerstone of this effort is a biennial survey of over 2,500 adults in the United States. Giving and Volunteering in the United States reports on the results of in-home personal interviews that have been conducted every two years since 1988. Survey questions range from the basic level of giving and volunteering of an individual and his or her household, to the organizations that benefit from these gifts, to public attitudes and motivations of those who give and volunteer.
