Emerging Leaders Program at the INDEPENDENT SECTOR Annual Conference

An important part of INDEPENDENT SECTOR's Annual Conference and Meeting of Members is the Emerging Leaders Program at the IS Annual Conference. Celebrating its tenth year, the Emerging Leaders Program provides those new to the sector an opportunity to enhance their leadership capacity.

This year's conference theme, Uncommon Visions for the Common Good, will engage conference participants in a learning discussion on creative, powerful strategies and solutions to help our communities and our organizations survive and thrive in challenging times.

The 2003 Emerging Leaders Program at the INDEPENDENT SECTOR conference is made possible through the generous support of The San Francisco Foundation, The Stuart Foundation, The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, and the California Healthcare Foundation, based in Oakland, California.

What is INDEPENDENT SECTOR’s Emerging Leaders Program?
Since 1994, the INDEPENDENT SECTOR Emerging Leaders Program has exposed emerging leaders to the nonprofit sector; while providing a forum for IS members to hear new ideas and fresh perspectives. The program strategically targets newcomers to the nonprofit sector committed to a long-term career in the nonprofit sector. To date, over 300 future nonprofit leaders have registered for the program, many of whom are currently in leadership positions throughout the nonprofit sector.

The purpose of INDEPENDENT SECTOR’s Emerging Leaders Program is twofold:

  • To build and strengthen the leadership capacity of emerging leaders.

  • To develop a culture within the sector that invests in its future leadership.

Who is an Emerging Leader?
Emerging leaders are considered those individuals from every age range and every demographic group who are working in the nonprofit or philanthropic sector and have a long-term commitment to public service. This description includes those who are newcomers to the sector through age or through crossing over from another sector. It also includes those, who, for a variety of reasons, may have been working in the sector but because of gender, ethnicity, geographic isolation, or other social or cultural barriers have had limited leadership opportunities.

How can nonprofit leaders and organizations support the program?
Leaders of national nonprofits, foundations, and corporate giving programs can bring along an emerging leader on staff as part your organization’s delegation.

How do I register for the Emerging Leaders Program?
To register for the 2003 Emerging Leaders Program you must register for the entire conference.
To qualify for the special rate you must: (1) have less than five years experience in the nonprofit sector, and (2) attend the entire conference and all Emerging Leaders Program sessions.

Scholarships are available to need-based applicants. To apply submit a 250 word or less statement indicating your leadership role, and how do you expect the IS Annual Conference to help you in your current leadership role. Please send the statement and your contact information to Jocabel Michel.

The program is limited to the first 50 that register by Monday, October 27.
