Election 2008: Voter Registration

Post a Voter Registration Link

One of the easiest and most effective activities a nonprofit can engage in is encouraging its staff, board members, volunteers, supporters, and service recipients to register to vote. There are a number of websites that provide voter registration forms and information.

Nonprofits can partner with Working Assets to post a link on their website telling employees, visitors, and supporters where and how to register to vote or change their registration information. A number of nonprofit organizations including the National Council of La Raza, Project Vote, and Independent Sector have partnered with Working Assets to increase voter registration.

To participate in this effort, select one of the graphics provided on the Working Assets' GoVote website, and link it to: http://www.govote.org. Be sure to include your voter registration link in your organization's email newsletters as a reminder to your members.

Nonprofits that are interested in becoming a GoVote affiliate partner (a data-sharing program designed for medium and high-traffic sites) should contact Will Easton at weaston@wafs.com.

Other Voter Registration Projects:

  • The Minnesota Participation Project facilitates cooperation between 501(c)(3) groups active in voter mobilization at the city and state level, and national groups providing funding and doing mobilization work in Minnesota; provides resources and technical assistance to groups active in voter mobilization; and encourages new groups to get active in voter mobilization.

  • The League of Women Voters provides state election office contact information, registration deadlines, and answers to basic questions about registering to vote.

  • United Way of America includes a link to a voter registration site that also provides information on candidates running for federal and state offices.

  • Project Vote Smart provides extensive information about voter registration and absentee ballot requirements in each state, with easy links to the appropriate federal and state government Internet sites where voters can obtain forms.

Please share your own organization's activities or any resources, online or otherwise, that would help other nonprofits encourage voter participation and raise the visibility of issues important to them during this election season—email: publicpolicy@IndependentSector.org.
