This session will explore three different approaches that nonprofits and foundations have taken and the lessons we can learn from their experiences to make our voices more effective going forward.

Increasing Our Community's Clout with Elected Officials
Although some nonprofits have had great success in advancing legislation related to their specific missions, we have been less successful as a community in advancing our common interests. Congress and many state legislatures still do not understand how we work nor do they see us as an essential part of rebuilding our economy and serving the interests of our nation. In this session, we'll explore ideas for increasing the power of the nonprofit and philanthropic voice at the state and federal level through creating new venues of communication and re-thinking our strategies for mobilizing around a shared agenda.
Discussants:
Kyle Caldwell, president and CEO, Michigan Nonprofit Association
Daniel Fuller, vice president, legislative relations, Communities In Schools
Jon Pratt, executive director, Minnesota Council of Nonprofits

Creating Communications Strategies for Greater Policy Impact
How can we re-shape our communications strategies to have a greater impact on policy decisions at the local, state and national level? What would success look like and how do we get there?
Jon Haber, a recognized policy communications expert and campaign veteran, will share lessons from failed and successful campaigns to help us develop more effective messages and get them across to the right audiences.
10:00 - 11:30 a.m.
What's Holding Up Our Engagement in Advocacy?
Nonprofits have strong connections to the community that haven't been fully realized as a force in shaping public policies, and most foundations are not exercising their ability to support efforts to engage communities in policy advocacy. What's holding us back? Is it fear of stepping over the legal boundaries? Are we worried about being branded as an evil lobbyist in the minds of the public, including our elected officials? We'll hear from some heroes who aren't afraid and share ideas for helping our community overcome the barriers to full support and engagement of the advocacy efforts we need to meet the serious challenges ahead.
Discussants:
Candy Hill, senior vice president, Social Policy and Government Affairs, Catholic Charities USA
Luz A. Vega-Marquis, president and CEO, Marguerite Casey Foundation
