2009 NGen Program Schedule

NGen Schedule

The NGen program brings together talented nonprofit professionals under the age of 40 to increase their visibility and voice at the IS Annual Conference, enhance their knowledge and networks, and address issues of importance to them.

The schedule was built to complement the regular conference program so participants could have a full and varied experience.

Career Development: What's Next?
Many young leaders spend their early careers achieving their initial goals -- becoming a middle or senior manager, or starting an organization--only to wonder, ?now what?? This session will focus on three key aspects of answering that question: (1) understanding the skill sets needed to change fields or integrate into a new organization and how to fill any gaps you may have; (2) managing your personal brand apart from the brand of your organization; and (3) understanding what you can learn about your future from experiences of peers and mentors.

Speakers:

  • David Simms, managing partner, Bridgestar, The Bridgespan Group
  • Michael Watson, senior vice president, Human Resources, Girl Scouts of the USA

Moderator:

  • Michael Smith, vice president, Social Innovation, The Case Foundation

Planning Your Career and Moving Up
Are you new to the nonprofit sector or looking to move up in your organization or the nonprofit community? This practical and participatory workshop will provide you with tools and strategies for pursuing a meaningful, sustainable, and well-compensated career in the nonprofit sector. It will examine areas such as defining your core competencies, clarifying your goals and career plans, expanding your responsibilities, pursuing professional development opportunities and graduate degrees, networking within your community, and negotiating a competitive compensation package.

  • James Weinberg, president and CEO, Commongood Careers

Successful Fund-Raising Strategies for A Challenging Economy:
A Case Study and Discussion
It is critical in any economic environment to understand the practices that help charitable organizations maintain powerful fundraising programs. This session will analyze a local campaign from three perspectives: (1) the organization, (2) the development and management consultants, and (3) a significant funder. Join a discussion to learn best practices on how to adopt new fundraising strategies and position your organization for a successful future recovery.

Speaker:

  • Kevin Cherep, vice president, Community Counseling Service Co. Inc.

Working Effectively with Every Generation
What tools do emerging leaders need to thrive in their organizations? How can they develop productive working relationships with both those they report to and those they supervise? Join this session for ideas on how to better to understand multi-generational leadership within your organization, develop mutual mentoring and peer coaching opportunities, and structure work projects to meet your needs and the needs of your organization. Featured in this session will be a recent study by the Building Movement Project, Idealist.org, and American Express about ways to work more efficiently and effectively across the generations.

11:30 - 1:00 p.m.
