Conference Call:
Assessing a Nonprofit’s Work Overseas -- Striking the Right Balance of Short-Term Efficiency and Long-Term Capacity

This call was generously sponsored by

On Tuesday, December 1, 2009, Independent Sector convened Doug Rutzen, president of the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law, Ken Berger, president and CEO of Charity Navigator, and Sam Worthington, president and CEO of InterAction, to examine methods for assessing a nonprofit’s work overseas.

This dynamic discussion, sponsored by the GE Foundation, explored how nonprofits can develop measurements for their impact overseas while considering the specific challenges that can affect an organization’s ability to develop accurate metrics for its international work. This conversation focused on:

  • The balance between short-term efficiency and long-term capacity;
  • Core competency areas needed to engage in work overseas; and
  • The relationships between accountability, effectiveness ratings and impact.

As Doug noted during this call, discussing international capacity building and effectiveness is only the beginning of the dialogue relating to international–specific issues which effect nonprofits who operate overseas.
