A vibrant, effective nonprofit sector is essential to a strong community. To have their greatest impact, charities and foundations need to share their expertise and experience in addressing crucial problems and to join their voices when speaking with leaders in other sectors.

For three decades, Independent Sector has been providing leadership that brings the nonprofit community together. The approximately 600 organizations that compose IS increase their ability to improve lives by being part of our coalition. In today’s climate of intense demands on resources, competing interests, and heightened expectations, the need has never been greater to unite in addressing the issues facing our organizations and our communities, including working with government to benefit people everywhere.

If the nonprofit community is to respond to these challenges, Independent Sector must build a coalition that is even more broadly based and diverse. That is why we hope you will join our Member Get a Member: Spread the Word campaign. It will help staff at our member organizations to reach out to colleagues at charities and foundations that have not yet joined IS in order to make our voice even stronger.

Our members are our strongest advocates

Staff at Independent Sector member organizations are powerful advocates for our coalition. You have already seen the benefits of working with leading nonprofits from across the country, and many members say they enjoy helping their peers discover the value of IS.

We want want to raise the level of awareness of what we do and how adding your  voice to our work will help them and the nonprofit community as a whole. Participating in this effort gives leaders who are already part of our dynamic coalition an exceptional opportunity to share with their peers how Independent Sector membership will help them serve their communities.

Becoming a part of the campaign will enable you to:

Strengthen the nonprofit community;
Expand and diversify our network of nonprofit leaders and other professionals;
Enhance the value of your investment in the IS coalition by helping to strengthen it;
Introduce your peers to a world of access to leaders of the sector; and
Amplify their voice with legislators and government officials.

We understand achieving this goal requires time and commitment, and we want others to be aware of your efforts to bolster the work of nonprofits. The members who help grow our coalition will receive special recognition on the IS website, in Memo to Members, and in our Annual Report.

How to Help

We have made it easy to share the word about Independent Sector by providing useful materials, such as recruitment tips and talking points about IS.
Direct colleagues to the IS website to obtain a membership application.
Contact our membership department at 202-467-6161 or at membership@independentsector.org to request a membership information packet.
Provide IS staff with the contact information of prospective members and leave the rest to us. When your contact becomes a member, you will receive the recognition.
