IS Statement on the Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007

(Washington, D.C., September 18, 2007) -- Independent Sector supports the recently enacted reforms that will lend greater transparency to lobbying activities and Congressional operations, but still safeguard the rights of individuals to voice their opinions to their elected officials through the charitable organizations in which they participate.

The final version of the Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007 corrected a provision in a proposed Senate rule that would have barred Senators from accepting free attendance at events held by charities that retain lobbyists. The House made a similar correction to its rules in May. IS is pleased that all charities -- including those who retain or employ lobbyists -- may continue to invite members of Congress, staff, and families to attend fundraising events free of charge.

IS will be working with its members to help charitable organizations understand and comply with the new reporting requirements.
