1,000 Charity and Foundation Leaders to Gather at IS's 25th Anniversary Conference in Washington, D.C.

(Washington, D.C. - August 30, 2005) – As the philanthropic community comes under increased scrutiny from Congress and the public, top leaders of the nation’s foundations, corporations, and charities will come together for Independent Sector’s 25th Anniversary Conference from October 23-25, 2005 in Washington, D.C. Approximately 1,000 CEOs and senior-level executives from diverse and varied segments of the charitable sector from across the country are expected to convene to focus on the social compact and the role the charitable community plays in its definition and fulfillment.

WHAT: Independent Sector’s 25th Anniversary Conference

WHEN: October 23-25, 2005

WHERE: JW Marriott Hotel, Washington, D.C.

Speakers include:

  • John Bridgeland, president and CEO of Civic Enterprises;
  • James Canales, president and CEO of The James Irvine Foundation;
  • Marsha Evans, president and CEO of American Red Cross;
  • Stanley Litow, president of IBM Foundation;
  • Steve McCormick, president and CEO of The Nature Conservancy;
  • Bill Novelli, CEO of AARP; and
  • Diana Aviv, president and CEO of Independent Sector.

Under the theme “Reshaping the Social Compact,” the conference will examine a range of issues including:

  • The complex set of relationships and responsibilities that constitute the social compact and ways to engage new communities into the fabric of society;
  • How charitable organizations are working to shape policies that affect their ability to serve the public good as Congress considers major reforms to the nation’s tax laws and changes in the rules for advocacy, funding, and charitable oversight; and
  • The work of charitable organizations across the country to improve ethical practice and program effectiveness.

Independent Sector will also recognize outstanding contributions to the field of philanthropy by honoring recipients of the John W. Gardner Leadership Award, the Leadership IS Award, and the Virginia A. Hodgkinson Research Prize.
