Department: Planning and Learning
Reports to: Vice President, Research, Evaluation and Special Projects
Job Purpose: As part of the Planning and Learning Department team, this position provides research and project management support on issues related to the nonprofit and philanthropic sector including Annual Conference program development and execution, sector-related research projects and strategic initiatives undertaken by the department, internal evaluation functions, and other matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain data on the nonprofit sector related to its size and economic impact, the philanthropic giving it receives, volunteering rates, and other longitudinal data.
- Respond to internal as well as external information/data requests, particularly from IS member organizations.
- Scan relevant literature, publications and list-serves for data and information that may be pertinent to IS initiatives and develop and maintain an index to allow easy retrieval of information when needed.
- Maintain up-to-date statistics on the character and size of the nonprofit sector for use in external and internal communications, media, and in response to general inquiries.
- Support the planning and development of Annual Conference program content, including topic identification and research, speaker coordination, session format development, and other duties associated with overall conference execution.
- Support IS’s organizational evaluation work, to include assistance with surveys or other research projects, as required, as well as analysis of data to assist the organization in assessing its performance.
- Develop charts, tables, and graphs for use in publications or presentations, as needed.
- Prepare research summaries on issues related to the nonprofit and philanthropic sector, such as governance, compensation, size, and scope of the sector, as needed.
- Assist with ongoing internal knowledge management.
- Assist in drafting proposals, reports, and correspondence related to organizational initiatives.
- Assist in staffing and coordinating committee meetings, including the preparation of materials and minutes.
- Update the website and assist with outgoing communications about programs.
- Administer and maintain project information for project managers/directors as requested. Perform as the task specialist for assigned projects and be responsible for practical activities or analyses. Provide analytical support to project managers and directors.
- Develop and maintain outside partnerships and collaborations with IS members and others through relevant initiatives, connections to academic centers, and through other infrastructure group-related work.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 3 – 5 years of job related experience desired. Advanced degree in Social Sciences, Public Administration or related field is preferable.
- Strong interest and experience (volunteer or paid) in the nonprofit and philanthropic sector.
- Project management and strategic thinking skills.
- Outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and in teams.
- Highly motivated and a self-starter.
- Ability to work under pressure and under tight deadlines, juggling several tasks at once.
- Ability to interact with high level individuals across a range of organizations.
- Very strong qualitative and analytical skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and keen attention to detail.
- Strong research skills using both web-based and published materials. Familiarity with government and nonprofit data sources is a plus.
- Ability to verify the accuracy of data sets and computer-generated reports.
- Experience collecting, analyzing, and organizing data and producing reports.
- Highly proficient in the use of computer software, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Access and familiarity with statistical software such as SPSS or SAS.
