Encourage your staff to vote
All nonprofits should encourage their staffs to vote. Although federal law does not require that employers give employees time off to vote, many states have such requirements in situations where an employee’s work hours do not permit time to vote during poll hours.
Encourage campaign participation but involvement must be individual and separate from the organization
Employees may be encouraged to work independently on political campaigns, but this work must be conducted on their own time and away from work.
Employees, volunteers, and board members working on political campaigns should be required to clearly state that they are acting in their individual capacity, not on behalf of the organization, when they engage in partisan activity and that any reference made to the organization is made for identification purposes only.
