How Do Donors, Policymakers and the Media Learn About Nonprofit Organizations?

Media, public and congressional scrutiny of nonprofit organizations have made accurate and timely information more important than ever before. Electronic filing of Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF facilitates transparency and financial accountability and improves the efficiency of government oversight of charitable and philanthropic organizations.

A two-year, grant-funded national collaborative project, EDIN and its network advocated for an expeditious, smooth transition to electronic filing. Organizations interested in streamlining charitable reporting have used this website to learn about e-filing from the IRS, state charity officials, nonprofit leaders, software developers, and professional accountants.

IRS Proposes E-filing Requirements for Large Exempt Organizations

On January 12, 2005, the
IRS published proposed regulations requiring certain tax-exempt organizations to electronically file Forms 990. Organizations with $100M or more in total assets will be required to e-file their 2005 Form 990 in 2006. Organizations with $10M or more in total assets will be required to e-file their 2006 Form 990 in 2007. Private foundations, regardless of size or assets, will also be required to e-file Form 990-PF in 2007.
These regulations apply only to organizations that file at least 250 “returns” (any form filed with the IRS) annually. For more information, click here.
