The American Express Building Leadership Award was established
in 1999 to recognize outstanding organizations for their leadership in
investing in the people of the charitable community, through an emphasis on the
development of internal staff, board, and volunteer leadership. This honor was
previously known as the Leadership IS Award.
The 2009 recipient of the American Express Building
Leadership Award was Community Voices Heard, which was honored for empowering low-income people in New York City and State to advocate for
public policy changes that improve their lives.
