| 10:25 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. | A Perfect Storm: Time to Change Course or Hunker Down? There are multiple storm fronts on the horizon: Congress has begun a multi-year look at the tax code with “everything on the table”; government is cutting key programs at historic levels, and looking to nonprofits and their donors as potential revenue sources; new for-profit organizations are providing social benefit, blurring the lines between sectors; and the rules of political speech have changed, further marginalizing the voices of the people we serve. This perfect storm of circumstances and events compels us to reexamine our core, our history, and our purpose. Join two experts as they challenge us to step back and look at the big picture and lead us in a discussion of the rules that govern us. Discussants:

| 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | A State Perspective: Trends In Nonprofit Regulation Advocating at the federal level is only a piece of what it takes to get our advocacy jobs done. Many times, the executive branch is where the real action is. A top official representing state charity officials will join us to discuss nonprofit trends across the country at the state level. Always open and forthright, he will talk about what’s on the horizon, and answer your probing questions about how and why administrative and regulatory decisions are made. Mark Pacella past-president of the National Association of State Charity Officials |

With our experts and practitioners, we will unpack the obstacles and develop strategies to maximize our influence in the policy debates ahead. Discussion Leader: Discussants: Lawrence Ottinger |
| 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. | The Role of the CEO in Advocacy CEOs add an important perspective and are a valuable asset in your advocacy tool kit. Keeping him or her engaged and informed is critical in your success; but building that relationship and knowledge-flow can be a delicate balance. Hear from two CEOs and their senior advocacy staff on what makes this relationship effective, how to overcome potential pitfalls, and their answers to your dilemmas about when and how to engage your CEO in advocacy. Discussion Leader: Discussants: Maria Wynne |
| 4:15 – 5:30 p.m. | The Tax Reform Lifeboat: What Survives, What Goes Overboard The reasons behind the push for tax reform are many–simplicity, equity, economic growth, deficit reduction–and the implications for the nonprofit sector could be profound. As lawmakers consider everything from closing loopholes to abandoning the income tax in favor of a national value-added tax, the fundamentals are all on the table. Will the requirements for tax-exempt status be changed? Will tax incentives for charitable giving survive? In this dynamic environment, it’s not enough to simply fight for what we have. It’s time to start thinking about options and alternatives. This high-level session will wrap-up the first day of PPAI, and tackle some of the tough questions we’ll face in the coming tax reform debate. Discussion Leader: Michael Rohd Discussants: Carrie Calvert Aaron Dorfman Neal Denton Jatrice Martel Gaiter Heather Watts Noonan Jon Pratt Seth Turner |
