The Online Forum Is Now Closed
From July 15 to July 25, Independent Sector conducted a dynamic online forum where individuals offered ideas and opinions, respond to others, and joined with colleagues to identify the best of the best.
Inside the IS 990 forum, contributors were able to:
- Submit their own ideas
- Comment on the ideas of others
- Comment on the IRS raised issues
- Vote for ideas they like
IS will use the dialogue to formulate our recommendations to the IRS and respond to questions from Congress about the views of our members. Thank you to everyone who particiapted in the forum.
BACKGROUNDThe IRS invited public comments on the Form 990. In addition, Members of Congress have asked for IS member feedback on 990 issues. This forum was intended to provide a place where IS members could talk with us and each other about how the 990 can be improved.
The IRS extensively redesigned Form 990, Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax, for tax year 2008 to promote tax compliance and increase transparency. They have made many revisions to the 2009 and 2010 Forms 990, schedules, and instructions, mostly corrections and clarifications to make the Form easier to understand and complete, and plan to make further revisions.
