The NGen: Moving Leaders from Next to Now program enhances the visibility, leadership presence and professional networks of emerging leaders under age 40.  This preconference programming complements the main conference by strengthening the capacity of the sector's young leaders to contribute to addressing our society's most significant challenges now and over time.

NGen Orientation* After welcoming remarks from Independent Sector's president and CEO, Diana Aviv, participants received a brief overview of the NGen program and were given the opportunity to build their cohort.

Understand and Leverage Personal and Organizational Networks*
Why are we attracted to being part of a network? How is social capital distinct from other types of capital? What are the challenges to establishing networks and how do you leverage your ecosystem to optimize your personal and organizational brand to impact change? These questions were explored during this in-depth lab experience through a combination of large and small group experiences.  Participants left this lab with a clear understanding of networks and how to optimize and expand their network over the next 4 days at the IS Annual Conference.

NGen Keynote Dinner*
A great evening with the under-40 crowd at this special pre-conference dinner. Hosted by NGen and featuring Ben Rattray, founder and CEO of Change.org, and his TED- like talk on Why Nearly Everything You Try Should Fail. Participants had the opportunity to engage with Ben in an interactive dialogue.

An Evening on the Town with YNPN Chicago
In partnership with YNPN Chicago and YNPN National, Independent Sector offered an opportunity for emerging leaders nationwide to connect with the emerging leaders of Chicago's YNPN chapter.

Participants were able to choose from two concurrent workshops offered:

A Conversation with the 2011 American Express NGen Leadership Awardee*
A conversation with 2011 American Express NGen Leadership Award recipient Ai-jen Poo, director, National Domestic Workers Alliance. Participants engaged with Ai-jen to learn more about her personal leadership journey and provide input on the vision and strategy of her newest initiative, Caring Across Generations.

Leading Change*
Organizational change is accelerating, but the methods most managers use to attempt transforming their organizations routinely fall short of their goals. What will it take to make your organization successful now and into the years ahead? How can you manage change in the most effective way? Based on John Kotter's Leading Change, participants together in the Café format to learn about the eight stages necessary for change efforts to take hold in this engaging and highly participative session.

Coaching as a Management Tool*
Coaching approaches, such as the strategic use of powerful questions and the intentional development of deeper emotional intelligence, can transform teams and workplaces into more productive learning environments. This workshop, facilitated by Executive Service Corps,  instructed participants on how and when to use coaching techniques, either when managing a team or when being managed, to move forward in your career and achieve important organizational outcomes.

Harness Your Personal Power*
We all experience the effects of power dynamics in both our personal and professional lives. This session focused on the personal side of power and how we as individuals can navigate and influence power dynamics in our offices and personal interactions. Using input from the participants of the 2011 YNPN National Conference and the 2011 EPIP National Conference, this session brought together both nonprofit and foundation professionals to deepen the conversation of power dynamics.

NGen Ambassadors Luncheon*
During this progressive lunch, NGeners had the opportunity to meet and interact with top nonprofit and philanthropic leaders designated as NGen Ambassadors. This valuable networking time will be coupled with discussions about future trends and the role that young leaders play in contributing to the vibrancy and effectiveness of the sector.

Main Conference begins

Throughout the IS main conference, NGen participants had several opportunities to connect with one another and with diverse nonprofit and philanthropic leaders from across the country. Specific opportunities includeed, but wer not limited to, two NGen-sponsored Connections Sessions:

Power Dynamics in the Social Sector. How can we work to make positive change in the distribution of power in the sector? Participants joined in a conversation grounded in the history of the field, to examine current examples of how people are making changes today, and what can be done to continue to make change in the future.

Changing the Status Quo: Intentional Succession Planning through Leadership Development. Meet the 2010 American Express NGen Fellows and learn and discuss key findings from their report.

Also, be sure to check out the NGen Lounge in the International Ballroom at the Fairmont Hotel for Halloween treats and networking opportunities.

Tuesday, November 1

NGen Breakfast with the 2011 Fellows
This informal breakfast will be open to all NGen’ers and Ambassadors attending the conference. In connection with their project work, the 2011 NGen Fellows will be seated at tables to meet with the rest of the community and provide a time for networking, reflection, and feedback among those who attend. This session is open to all NGen'ers at the conference, even those who did not attend the NGen Pre-conference Program.
