The record-breaking 2009 Annual Conference examined how nonprofits and foundations can respond to the extraordinary challenges affecting communities across the country, both now and in the years to come. More than 1,100 leaders gathered in Detroit for innovative sessions that tapped into the vast expertise of participants.

Highlights included the keynote address of IS President and CEO Diana Aviv, which called on nonprofits to pursue both their missions and the broader needs of society, and the presentation of the Gardner Leadership Award to Geoffrey Canada of the Harlem Children’s Zone for his extraordinary work in breaking the cycle of poverty.
